Peerio has been acquired by WorkJam, the leading digital workplace platform

Today we have a bittersweet announcement to share with you. First, the sweet, we’re excited to announce that Peerio and our entire team have been acquired by WorkJam, a leading digital workplace platform that shares in our mission to provide simple and secure communications. For the bitter, this means the Peerio service will be closing on July 15th, 2019.  It’s been an incredible journey these last four years for Peerio, and we couldn’t have done it without you, our users. So we want to offer a sincere thank you for your support and everything you’ve done to help advance usable security.

Back in 2014, our CEO Vincent Drouin founded Peerio Technologies with the conviction that real security needs to start with the end-user. He teamed up with Florencia Herra-Vega (Co-Founder, CTO) to build the first version of Peerio. The free desktop app made encryption as easy as sending messages and sharing files—literally. Press send, and Peerio took care of the rest.

When Peerio was released in January 2015, the reception was overwhelmingly positive. Wired called it “one of the most full-featured end-to-end encryption tools out there.” Popular Science listed the app as one of the greatest innovations of 2015. And the Washington Post added Peerio to its list of recommended encrypted tools for securely sending confidential information and documents to their journalists. Fast forward to 2018, and Peerio has evolved into a robust secure workstream collaboration platform, still driven by our goals for simplicity and ease-of-use.

In 2015, Peerio was on the frontiers of bringing end-to-end encryption to the masses. In the years since, we’ve been awe-inspired with how much security and encryption has entered the public consciousness, with even a few big names introducing ephemeral secret chats to their services. We’re proud to have been leaders at the forefront of this evolution.

While this has been a boon for the general public and personal privacy at the consumer level, these tools have posed new challenges to the security needs of businesses and organizations with more complex security and compliance requirements. At the same time, there’s been huge growth in the number of employees using consumer tools for their work communications, which presents an entirely new host of risks for organizations and their teams. Facing this new challenge is one of the reasons for we’re excited to be joining forces with WorkJam, because it means we’ll be continuing to work on the frontlines of usable end-to-end encryption. We’ll be exploring the dynamic and multi-tiered security needs of large organizations, and innovating new ways to deploy end-to-end encryption to provide unprecedented levels of security and privacy for organizations and their teams. By bringing this technology to scale we’ll be able to help even more people around the world benefit from usable, secure, end-to-end encrypted communications.

Why WorkJam? Because they share our belief that team collaboration and secure communication go hand-in-hand. WorkJam’s Digital WorkPlace is a platform that empowers frontline workers by giving them control over their communications, scheduling, and training. It provides organizations with the tools to invest in their people by creating a more knowledgeable, engaged and productive workforce helping to create a culture of trust, collaboration, and empowerment. Our team will be working to bolster these offerings with new chat features and, of course, encryption.

We couldn’t be happier to be joining WorkJam and working to build the market’s most complete and secure enterprise class digital workplace platform – one that will unify the employee experience across an ever-growing number of channels, devices, and touch points.
